About Sophia

A good English or French lesson gives you something you actually want to say. I build from there: finding an idea, choosing the words and working out how to communicate it clearly. I'm Sophia, and I support Alberta students with English Language Arts and French from junior high into senior high school. In English, I enjoy helping students move from a collection of observations to an argument that holds together. We can discuss a character, examine a short passage or work through an essay plan before tackling a full draft. In French, there's plenty of space to speak, pause, rephrase and have another go. A lesson might begin with a photograph, a short article or a topic you've been talking about at school. I like theatre, photography and discovering new music, and I enjoy bringing those interests into language lessons when they connect with a student's own.

Tutoring experience

During three years of tutoring, I've worked with students on reading comprehension, analytical paragraphs, personal responses and oral presentations. My senior high English experience includes English Language Arts 10-1, 20-1 and 30-1, alongside junior high reading and writing support. I've also tutored students taking French 10-3Y and 20-3Y, helping them build vocabulary, use familiar grammar in new situations and prepare for speaking tasks. Some learners come with an assignment and a deadline; others want consistent weekly practice. In both cases, I give specific feedback that they can apply to the next piece of work.

Sophia helped me turn my scattered notes into an argument for English 20-1. Talking it through before writing was a game changer. I still wrote the essay myself, but I wasn't staring at a blank page anymore.

Sophia listens carefully to our son's ideas and helps him express them more clearly. He used to dismiss every piece of writing as 'bad'; now he can identify what works and what needs another draft. We really value that change.

Our daughter comes away from French lessons wanting to tell us what she said. Sophia has made speaking practice feel like a conversation instead of a test. Such a welcome change.

I like how relaxed the French practice is, and I get more chances to speak than in class. A short vocabulary recap afterwards would help me remember everything. The lessons themselves have been useful.
