About Jessica

Hi, I'm Jessica! I enjoy helping students find the words for what they want to say, whether that's the first sentence of an English essay or an answer they feel nervous giving in French. I tutor BC English Language Arts and French, with a particular interest in reading, writing and spoken confidence. I work with students from Grades 5 to 12. For older learners, that can mean planning a response for English Studies 12, developing a piece for Composition 10 or practising a Core French presentation. With younger students, we might talk through a story, build a paragraph together or turn new vocabulary into a short conversation. You don't need a polished answer before we can begin. Outside lessons, I'm usually reading a novel, baking something or adding another book to an already ambitious reading list.

Tutoring experience

I've spent four years tutoring English and French through individual lessons and small homework groups. I've helped reluctant readers discuss a text in their own words, supported students with longer essays and rehearsed oral presentations with learners who find speaking in front of a class difficult. My French experience includes Core French and language support for students in the middle years of French immersion. I use school assignments and teacher feedback to decide what deserves our attention, while keeping the writing and ideas the student's own. Parents of younger learners receive a brief update on what we practised and what would be useful to continue at home.

We appreciate the brief updates after our son's French lessons. They tell us what to practise without turning the whole evening into homework. He enjoys the conversations and is beginning to answer in full sentences.

My Grade 6 daughter usually answers questions about books with 'I don't know'. Jessica gives her time to talk and follows up on her ideas. Hearing her explain a character's choices at dinner was a lovely surprise.

Jessica has helped our son organise his writing for Composition 10. The discussions are productive, although he would benefit from leaving a little more lesson time to write independently. We've been pleased with his progress.

My English Studies 12 essays were mostly retelling the story. Jessica asked me to explain what each quotation proved, and that finally clicked. Her feedback is specific enough that I know what to change without losing my own voice.

I actually volunteered an answer in French this week. Practising with Jessica first made it feel much less scary :)
