About Alice
I provide focused Math and Physics tutoring for students following the Ontario curriculum, alongside Chemistry and introductory Computer Science, with careful attention to the reasoning behind each solution. My aim is to help students approach unfamiliar questions with a method they understand and can use independently. After studying mathematical physics, I completed teacher education and obtained my Ontario General Certificate of Qualification and Registration. I was particularly interested in assessment: how a student's working can reveal a misconception that a mark alone would miss. That interest informs the way I structure lessons. My additional subject support builds on the quantitative side of my background. In Chemistry, I concentrate on foundational reactions, amounts of substances and the calculations that connect them. In introductory Computer Science, we work on variables, conditions, loops and using a short program to investigate a numerical problem. Lessons are organised around three stages: 1. Establish the starting point. We review a recent question or piece of work to identify the specific concept or skill that needs attention. 2. Develop a reliable method. I explain the reasoning, demonstrate how to set out the work and ask the student to justify key decisions. We also consider how diagrams, graphs and equations describe the same situation. 3. Check understanding. The student attempts a related problem with fewer prompts, then reviews both the result and the process. The balance changes according to the student's needs. A session before a test may concentrate on selecting methods and managing time, while ongoing support can give us space to revisit foundations and build fluency. Clear mathematical communication matters throughout: notation, units and explanations all help make thinking easier to follow. Please include the student's grade, course and current topic when enquiring.
Tutoring experience
My tutoring experience includes sustained support through Ontario secondary Math and Physics courses, alongside focused preparation for individual assessments. I have also helped students with foundational Chemistry calculations and introductory programming, using familiar mathematical reasoning to explain a new process. I have worked with students consolidating algebra and functions, as well as those applying these foundations to more demanding mathematical and physical problems. A recurring part of that work has been reviewing completed assessments with students. An incorrect result may come from interpreting a graph, choosing an equation or carrying out an otherwise sound method inaccurately. Separating those difficulties has helped me identify appropriate follow-up work. I have also supported students moving into senior courses, where selecting a method independently and presenting a coherent solution become increasingly important.
